A Magna Carta for Seafarers was filed by a neophyte party-list lawmaker which aims to uplift conditions of Filipino seafarers.
Carlo “Sandro” Gonzalez, Marino party-list Representative filed the House Bill 2317 also known as the Department of Overseas Filipinos Act of 2019 as well as the House Bill 2318 also known as Magna Carta for Seafarers Act of 2019.
“With these two measures, we seek to redeem the promise the Marino Party-list made to Filipino seafarers, that we will work to improve their working conditions and increase the standard of living of their families,” says Gonzalez in a statement.
Gonzalez also added that the Magna Carta for Seafarer “outlines the rights of seafarers as well as the measures to be implemented by concerned government agencies to protect them.”
As for the Department of Overseas Filipinos, it seeks to create a unit that specifically intends to address the concerns of seafarers considering the fact that they are mostly away from their families and spends most of the time at the sea.
The bill is similar to the one which was filed by Senator Bong Go.
“Our seafarers face loneliness at sea, but perhaps their worries can be eased by the knowledge that the whole of the Philippine government stands ready to assist them whenever they need help,” says Gonzalez.
“We will actively participate in the passage of these bills into law, along with all other bills which would be of great benefit to Filipino seafarers and their families,” he added.
