The first-ever hospital in the Philippines dedicated to Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) as well as their families recently had a groundbreaking in San Fernando, Pampanga.

This is already the second groundbreaking ceremony for the OFW hospital dedicated to responding to the medical needs of OFWs and their dependents.

The same ceremony was held last year participated by Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III, House Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, and Pampanga Governor Lilia.

This time, the groundbreaking ceremony was held just days after the memorandum of understanding was signed between partners namely, Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp., Bloomberry Cultural Foundation Inc., Kingsborough International Convention Center, Department of Labor and Employment and Department of Health.

The reason behind the delay in the construction of the OFW Hospital is yet to be explained. However, the House of Representatives committees on Health was requested to sponsor a bill to create the OFW Hospital. The bill was already passed which proves that the funding for the hospital will continue.

House Bill No. 9202 was passed at the House of Representatives but the Senate was not able to own a counterpart bill last year.

The OFW Hospital is expected to provide “tertiary level care” for both active and non-active members of OWWA as well as their legal dependents. The hospital is capable of housing 100 hospital beds and will have dialysis and cancer centers.
