The accused admitted in the investigation that he intentionally approached the Filipina in social media and lured her to go to Nigeria to become his captive.

On June 22, 2020, the Filipina was rescued and was taken to the hospital. The Nigerian police already reached out to the Philippine Embassy in Nigeria to assist the Filipina.

The Filipina was identified as Irene TorentoPanas, 40 years old. She was from Manila and works as an accountant. Panas went to Nigeria on November 22, 2019 to visit ChukwudiOdo, 54 years old from Enugu Ezike North LGA of Enugu State. The two met on Facebook last March 8, 2017.

The supposed 10-day visit turned to an abduction after the Nigerian refused to allow the Filipina to return to her country and was held against her will.

During the time of rescue, the victim is critically ill. A tip from some concerned citizens in the area prompted the police to conduct an inspection.

Police officers reminded the public to be extra careful against people that they only met online.
